Different types
of file formats allow you to decrease or increase
the size of your media files. The picture quality
of each file will be effected. For further information
about different file types then please read
the next section below.
File Types
Digital cameras
work within the following range of file formats:
JPEG
- This is the most common picture file format
used by camera manufacturers as it creates the
smallest file size and is universally accepted
by digital imaging software. It is recommended
that you use the highest file quality setting
(i.e. no compression) to maintain the best image
quality.
TIFF
- The image quality from these files is better
than JPEG. They take up more file space than
JPEG or RAW and can take longer to write to
memory.
RAW
- This file type is the nearest to a true film
negative as the camera itself does not process
the picture. Since there is no accepted standard
for RAW files, each manufacturers format is
different.
As you can see
from the above, there are differences between
each of these file formats. Generally, serious
amateurs and professionals will only work with
RAW files.
